At first glance, Peona might look like a spa but there is more than meets the eye. Founder Marise Bout fuses two of her professional interests – natural remedies and methodologies and alternative medicine – into helping women who are often too busy to take care of themselves. To eliminate the discomfort that results from overloading one’s mind and body, Marise takes a holistic approach to help support the immune system, to provide relief during periods of transition, to address one’s natural self-healing capacity, to strengthen, and to achieve a healthier and more vital lifestyle.

Esther P: How long have you been in the industry? What triggered you to pursue your own business?
Marise B:** **It all began in 2014 with a one-year massage course I enrolled in. I had been working in the consulting and management industry for as long as I could remember, and I wanted to learn something new. As I learned the practice of massage, I felt such great relief from working with hands and heart.
In 2015, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own practice at home. Having been self-employed since 2009, I already had the flexibility of time and place. As I am learning more and more about holistic therapy including therapeutic massage and food advice, I’m on my way to become a naturopath – slowly but surely!
EP: What has been the most challenging and rewarding about running your own practice?
MB: The most challenging part of my work is finding my own way, since there are so many types of natural remedies and methodologies. At the same time, I really enjoy exploring the world of alternative medicine. It is a great joy to see human nature with different eyes, connecting body and mind to natural elements such as fire, water, earth and wind. I’m greatly inspired by traditional Asian medical systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
EP: What type of services or treatments do you provide, and what is your favorite one to receive?
MB: I offer holistic therapy for body and mind. The methods I use depend on the patient’s personal balance and desires. They include Ayurvedic massage, reflexology and natural food advice. Ayurvedic massage is great treat; the massage is so relaxing with its meditative strokes and herbal oils. I love to receive this massage because it really grounds and energizes me.
EP: How does your practice differ from a traditional spa?
MB: My treatment plans take a holistic approach, which means that the body and mind go hand in hand. I always use the Ayurvedic Tridosha system to determine the best type of treatment for the client. In this way, the treatment is not only relaxing, but it really contributes to one’s overall insight and vitality.
EP: How did you first learn about Bitcoin, and what made you start accepting it?
MB: My friend and your colleague, Sjors Provoost, told me about Bitcoin. He’s a fanatic Bitcoin user and it was hard not to be convinced when I realized how passionate he was about the currency. When I found out about the opportunity to connect my booking tool to enable my clients to pay in Bitcoin, it was a no-brainer for me.
EP: Why do you believe in Bitcoin?
I believe Bitcoin is a great way to let everyone manage their own private banks. I love your slogan, “Be Your Own Bank”! In the current financial turmoil, I have no doubt that bitcoin can contribute to fair economics. It would be great if more Bitcoin enthusiasts would find their way to my practice.
