Merchant Spotlight - Kawika's Ocean Beach Deli

Our team loves sharing stories of real-world enthusiasts who appreciate bitcoin as much as we do!

In case you missed it, our mobile wallets have a directory of bitcoin-accepting businesses near you. Blockchain’s Merchant Directory was created as a tool to empower our rapidly growing user base to accept bitcoin as a merchant and to spend it as a consumer. It’s built directly into our iOS and Android wallets so you can find a nearby merchant easily and quickly! Whether you’re planning for a last minute dinner or a trip a few months away, it’s a great way to support the bitcoin community and to experience the benefits of using bitcoin as a practical alternative to cash or credit and debit cards.

Today, we’re excited to tell you whywe love Kawika’s Ocean Beach Deli (and why you should, too!).

Esther P: What is the unique story behind Kawika’s Ocean Beach Deli?

David N: Our 30-year-old community hub was re-opened under new ownership by David and Joanne Nottage just two years ago. Located seconds from the beach, we are simply passionate about the good things that life has to offer. Our amazing and talented team operates with a lot of heart and efficiency to create an irresistible array of the best deli goods. Each day, we strive to deliver an exceptional hospitality service, distinguished and fresh ingredients, flavors of Greece and Hawaii, and a comfortable and beach-themed space.

EP: When did you begin accepting bitcoin?

DN: As one of the first 100 businesses to adopt bitcoin in the San Francisco community, we began accepting bitcoin as an alternative payment method in December 2013. Bitcoin payments do not require any fees, and customers can even get a sandwich (or two) anonymously! Just like when paying with cash! Ha!

EP: How does Kawika’s Ocean Beach Deli stand out from the others?

**DN: **We offer fresh baked sourdough rolls, homemade gluten-free breads, in-house made and roasted rotisserie, roast beef, turkey, and leg of lamb, Greek lamb gyros with authentic homemade tzatziki sauce, homemade hummus, traditional and gluten-free salads, and a nice selection of chips, beer, wine, juices, homemade scones, premium 100% Kona coffee, Greek coffee and espresso drinks.

The team at Kawika’s Ocean Beach Deli regularly hosts Ocean Beach Social Club. The Club was created to help build community in the Outer Richmond at Ocean Beach for San Francisco residents and visitors. We create social events and opportunities for neighbors, friends and visitors to come together to participate in or enjoy free live entertainment events over great food and affordable wine/beer in a friendly neighborhood space. Open mic poetry, stand-up comedy, live Hawaiian, jazz, and R&R music, fundraisers, and intellectual conversations are just a few of the many hosted events!

EP: Could you tell us about any upcoming events?

DN: October 2nd, 2015 won’t be just another Friday. The first Friday of every month signifies ‘Aloha Friday’ with Happy Hour beginning at 5:00 PM and live music beginning shortly after at 6:00 PM featuring the* Na HoAloha* (The Friends) Band. * Na HoAloha* will play the ukuleles and sing beautiful songs of the tropical islands. There may even be a hula dancer or two. Come and enjoy the music with your family and friends, or meet new friends!

If you are in San Francisco and enjoy fresh sandwiches, live music, and Hulas, make sure you stop by.

The Ocean Beach Deli has been serving sandwiches, gyros, piroshkis, espresso and breakfast sandwiches in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of the Outer Richmond district near Kelly’s Cove since 1985.
